Iowa Weather Report June 6th 2015: Rain For Some, Downpours for Others

SOME RAIN THIS WEEKEND: There will be a system that will move through the state this weekend with some chances of showers and thunderstorms. The best chances look to occur during the overnight hours tonight into early on Sunday. We can’t rule out an isolated shower or storm Saturday afternoon in the western half of the state nor can we rule out showers and storms lingering in our eastern and southern counties Sunday afternoon into the evening. Highs this weekend will be in the 70s and 80s across the state. If you are going to be out and about, make sure you have an umbrella handy. This morning into early afternoon will be dry for most of the state except perhaps the far west and Sunday afternoon into the evening will be drier in our northern and far western counties as well. Rainfall amounts will vary with most getting a few tenths of an inch, however some places could get an inch or more especially in areas that get repeated thunderstorm activity or slow moving activity.

NEXT WEEK: Next week will start out a tad cooler and drier with mostly sunny skies around. Highs will be in the 70s to start with temperatures bumping back into the lower and middle 80s by the end of the week. Moisture will be returning by the end of the week as well and with another slow moving storm system at the end of the week and into the following weekend, more showers and thunderstorms will be possible at that time. Some decent amounts of rainfall could be possible with this system but it’s still early to determine specifics at this time. We should know more early next week.

BEYOND NEXT WEEKEND: As we look farther into the month of June, the GFS is showing another system moving into the state around the 16th of the month with more showers and thunderstorms. This looks to be followed by more activity around the 19th through the 21st as well. See nothing in terms of a heat wave in the offing at this point, but we’ll keep watching that in the coming days and weeks.
