All of Iowa, Flooding, Forecast, Severe Weather

Iowa Weather Report September 9th 2014

ACTIVE WEATHER: Several chances of showers and thunderstorms through the rest of the week with much cooler conditions coming for the end of the week. To start out, showers and thunderstorms will be possible later on today. There could be some lingering activity during the morning which should quickly move away. We may see some peaks of sunshine here and there but don’t expect much. Showers and storms look to redevelop in the afternoon and could become strong to severe. All modes of severe weather are certainly possible with the main threat transitioning to damaging winds as we go later into the evening and overnight. Heavy rain will be possible as well with many areas seeing at least an inch with some areas possibly getting as much as 3”. This heavy rain could lead to some localized flooding in some areas. The rain will be moving out of the state on Wednesday as the cold front moves through. This will bring the much cooler air mentioned earlier with readings likely falling through the day into the 40s by Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Highs on Thursday and Friday will be in the 50s and 60s across the state. There will be some sunshine around on Thursday, but Friday may bring some showers into the state that could keep readings down into the upper 50s for many. Depending on cloud cover and wind we could see some places easily get down into the 30s for a few nights, especially in the northern and northeastern counties of the state.

THE WEEKEND: There should be no issues this coming weekend with partly to mostly sunny skies around. Highs look to be in the 60s to lower 70s across the state. There should be no problems at the Iowa Iowa State game at Kinnick Saturday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK ON OUT: Monday into next Tuesday some moisture looks to move back into the state but it would be widely scattered at this point. We have plenty of time to watch this in the coming days. Looking farther out into the extended period, the northwesterly flow looks to continue for a few days more before briefly modifying later on. The GFS has a cut-off low that slowly moves across the area that may keep us cool and somewhat showery toward the end of the period, but we have plenty of time to watch that and see if it continues or if it changes on future model runs.
