JANBRRRARY: It will be quite cold if not recording breaking over the next few days and nights across the state. As one storm departs, cold air will be filtering if not plunging into the state today. Even though skies will be slowly clearing, the sunshine will not be helping in boosting the temperatures much above zero today. Tonight will be very cold with single digits and teens below zero quite common across the state. Some areas may hit -20 or colder, especially in areas with fresh snow cover and light winds. Friday will see moderating temperatures, winds out of the southwest and sunshine that will help to boost the temperatures into the teens and 20s. Unfortunately, it will be ahead of another clipper system that will move through late Friday night into Saturday that will drop the temperatures back down once again. This system will bring mainly flurries to the area with the heaviest accumulating snow likely stay to our north and northeast. Sunday will likely see readings in the single digits above and below zero for highs. Monday morning could be the coldest of the season with teens and 20s below zero quite common. This will easily break some record lows across the state if this verifies. During the day Monday it will likely not even crack zero across the state except perhaps the urban heat islands. Monday night will be cold once again (maybe a few degrees warmer) with possible record lows as well.

ON THROUGH THE EXTENDED PERIOD: Warmer air by the middle of next week will also bring our next best chance of widespread snow to the state by Wednesday. It is too early to pinpoint accumulations at this time but this run is showing that accumulations will be light at this point. Toward the middle of the month, temperatures look to moderate toward seasonal levels, but the GFS shows another arctic plunge around the 14th that may drop readings back below zero for lows and highs at that time. There could be some flurry activity with that cold blast along with another clipper system around the end of the period on the 17th. We continue to watch.
