FIRST DAYS OF NEW YEAR: The second piece of the clipper system will be moving through mainly the southern counties of the state today with some light snow there. An inch or two is possible in those areas with little to nothing in the northern counties. It will remain quite cold with readings in the single digits and teens across the state. Tonight will see temperatures drop below zero for all but the far southern counties where some lower single digit readings will be possible. It will still be mostly cloudy however which will keep readings from dropping any farther than they would if it would be clear. Thursday the sun reappears but unfortunately, warmer weather will not be appearing as highs will struggle in the single digits across the state. The northern counties may struggle to reach zero. Thursday night we’ll see lows drop well below zero again with clear to partly cloudy skies around. Friday will see moderating temperatures back into the teens and 20s but this will be short-lived with another clipper moving in Saturday with some light snow and flurries and readings will tumble once again.

HAPPY NEW COLD PUSH: In the wake of the Saturday clipper, readings will drop back into the single digits for highs on Sunday. Some of the northern counties again may struggle to reach zero during the day on Sunday. Monday morning could be quite chilly with lows in the teens and perhaps lower 20s below zero (depending on if we get calm winds). Highs on Monday may not even make it above zero in all but the southern counties and metro areas with the urban heat island effect (example Des Moines). Tuesday will also be similar as well with readings struggling to reach zero in many areas outside metro areas and perhaps the southwestern counties of the state. Temperatures will begin to moderate by Wednesday of next week with another system also approaching with more snow as well.

EXTENDED PERIOD: The GFS shows one storm that could bring us some snow on the 9th (next Thursday). Another system on the 13th into the 14th with some light snow as well. This will be followed by another system on the 15th into the 16th with some snow as well. The period does show temperatures moderating to near seasonal levels with several pushes of colder air following the last two storms in question at the middle of the month.
