Iowa Weather Report January 1st 2015: Happy New Year; Storm Saturday?

WEEKEND STORM: Still looking at a storm this coming weekend that could bring some snow to the state on Saturday into Sunday morning. There will be strong winds behind the system on Sunday that will bring some travel issues with blowing snow. It’s still too early to determine snow amounts at this time, but it does look like the heaviest snows will be over southern and southeastern counties. We should have a better look at this by tomorrow. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the 20s and lower 30s with plenty of sunshine around.

FOLLOWING WEEK: Another system will move quickly across the state Monday night into Tuesday. This will bring some snow to the state but like the storm previous, it’s too early to determine amounts with this system either, however there will be less moisture with this system so amounts may be lighter but this also can mean that the snow will be drier (more fluffy). Temperatures looks to stay slightly below seasonal levels until the end of the week when temperatures should warm to near or above seasonal levels at that time.

THROUGH THE IDES: The GFS is showing some interesting weather as we head into the middle of the month. A few systems could move through the area bringing some precipitation to the state along with some cold shots of air from Canada. One significant cold shot looks to come toward the end of the period, but we’ll have plenty of time to watch for that and other systems in the coming days. Otherwise Happy New Year.
