COLD AIR TO STAY: Everyone will be feeling a preview of January for the rest of the week and into the weekend as cold air from the Arctic will be spreading out across not just the state of Iowa, but most of the eastern two-thirds of the country as well. Readings will be mainly in the 20s and 30s for highs and lows in the teens. Some light snow showers are possible in the eastern counties early on today as the system pulls away, with slowly clearing skies. Wednesday through Friday show partly to mostly sunny skies around before the next system moves in Saturday into the morning hours of Sunday with some light snow or flurries. At this time, that system doesn’t look to have a lot of moisture to work with so any accumulations would be light, however we’ll watch for any changes in the coming days.
EXTENDED PERIOD SYSTEMS: This run of the GFS shows quite a few systems possibly affecting the state as we get close to Thanksgiving. One system looks to be quite interesting around the 23rd and 24th which could bring a plethora of precipitation to the state, but this is still two weeks out and could be in a much different state 24 hours from now. Overall during the period, readings still look to remain slightly below seasonal levels as an average as there looks to be some warm spells intermixed with cold shots coming down from Canada.
