Iowa Weather Report November 10th 2014: January arriving 2 months early

COLD BLAST: Fall will be coming to an end today by the looks of the next couple of days across the state. A storm system will be moving through the area today and into Tuesday with the chance of some rain and snow across the area. Now the heaviest snowfall accumulations will remain to our north over the Dakotas (namely South Dakota), Minnesota and Wisconsin where 6-12” is possible there. Anyone travelling toward the Twin Cities should be aware of this system over the next 24-36 hours as travel will become dangerous in those areas. Any accumulations in Iowa look to remain light with about an inch or two possible in the far northern counties of the state with perhaps a dusting up to an inch as far south as Highway 20 or Highway 30. Most of the snow would likely take place tonight into Tuesday morning. During the day today however, temperatures will be warm with readings well into the 50s and lower 60s across the state except the far northern counties which may stay in the 40s all day. The strong push of cold air will rush in tonight and last for the rest of the week and into the weekend with readings struggling to get out of the 20s and 30s for highs. Lows may drop into the single digits in the far northern counties Tuesday night with teens elsewhere. Teens for lows will be likely many of the nights through the weekend.

NO SIGN OF CHANGE: Even looking into the extended period, the GFS shows no real signs of change with regards to this blast of colder than average air. This model run doesn’t show any significant warmth returning until the week of Thanksgiving with a possible system approaching from the west switching the winds around to the south and southwest that may bring readings back to seasonal or perhaps even above seasonal levels at that time. We have plenty of time to watch for any changes and it’s likely that there will be some in the days ahead.
