Iowa Weather Report May 5th 2014

ACTIVE WEEK AHEAD: Partly to mostly sunny skies will be around today after a few morning showers in the eastern counties of the state. Highs will be in the 60s to lower 70s across the state. Readings will be a bit warmer on Tuesday with partly to mostly sunny skies once again with 60s and 70s across the state. Clouds will be on the increase as the next system will move in late Tuesday night through Wednesday and Thursday. Some of the storms could become strong to severe with all modes of severe weather possible. It’s still a bit too early to determine actual risk at this time, but we’ll be able to pinpoint this down by tomorrow or later today. Total precipitation could exceed an inch in some places with isolated heavier totals. Highs on Wednesday will surge into the 70s and 80s across the state with heat indices approaching or possibly exceeding 90. Thursday will be a bit cooler with more clouds around with 70s to lower 80s from northwest to southeast.

MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND: The storm system will move out of the state early on Friday with some shower activity at that time with some clearing during the day. It will be cooler with readings down into the 60s to near 70 for highs. Saturday will see partly to mostly sunny skies with a chance of a shower or storm around, but not everyone will get wet. Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 60s to middle 70s across the state. Mother’s Day looks to be about the same as on Saturday with a chance of a shower or storm around with readings in the upper 60s to the middle 70s across the state. This also looks to last into Monday as well ahead of the next storm system that will be gathering off to our west.

THROUGH THE IDES OF MAY: The GFS continues to show several systems moving through the area throughout the middle of May. There is no real trend as to when they will be moving through, but the underlying trend has been over the last few days that the middle of the month would continue the active weather pattern with readings near seasonal levels throughout the period. We’ll keep watch for any changes in the coming days and any new trends that might form.
