Iowa Weather Report March 3rd 2014

COLD WITH SNOW: It is going to be a cold start to the work week across the state with readings climbing into the single digits and lower teens across the state today. There will be plenty of sunshine around but it will be deceiving. A chance of some snow moves in across mainly our northeastern counties late tonight into Tuesday morning which may bring at best a dusting there. Tuesday will be warmer than today but still well below seasonal levels with upper teens north to near 30 southwest. Another more potent disturbance moves in Tuesday night into Wednesday which may bring some accumulating snow to the area. At this time best estimates would suggest an inch or two of snow is possible but we’ll have to wait at least until later today to get a better grasp on this system before we really pinpoint the totals down.

THROUGH THE WEEKEND: A warm front moves through on Thursday which may bring some light precipitation to the state, but this run keep the front around and then drops it back south as a cold front on Friday with some chances of precipitation at that time as well. Readings would likely be in the 20s north to perhaps low 40s south, but it will all be dependent on the position of the front. Saturday will bring much cooler readings to the entire state with readings likely back into the 20s to lower 30s for highs. This will be rather brief as winds look to turn around to the south and west on Sunday and readings began to climb once again.

LOOKING FOR SPRING: Going into the extended period the GFS shows a couple of systems that could bring some precipitation to the state. This would be mainly around the 12-15th of March. It also is showing that readings look to remain near to slightly below seasonal levels for the time period in question but that isn’t set in stone yet either. We’ll be able to clamp down on that as we get closer.
