GO AWAY HEAT!: Richard Marx sang the song Endless Summer Nights back in the late 80s but it had nothing to do with this seemingly endless summer that doesn’t want to go away anytime soon. More hot weather in store again today (as if that’s not a surprise). What is a surprise is readings will be well into the 90s with some areas possibly hitting the triple digits again. Lamoni hit it on Saturday and some areas specifically Des Moines may also hit the mark as well. Heat Indices will be at or over 100 but not much above because the humidity will be lower (in about the 20-35% range) which will keep the heat indices pretty close to the actual temperature.

RAIN MAYBE, PERHAPS: A cold front will move into the state late Monday night through Wednesday which will bring some scattered showers and thunderstorms to the area. It will be hit and miss again with some areas possibly getting nothing. Northwestern Iowa has the best crack at rain late Monday night into Tuesday morning while the rest of the state has their chances late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Most of the daylight hours will be dry with mainly sunny skies. Readings on Tuesday will range from the lower and middle 80s northwest to mid 90s southeast. Temperatures will really tumble downward Wednesday through the end of the week with 70s to lower 80s possible at that time with lows in the 50s to lower 60s.

WEEKEND WET: As the high pressure moves off to the east at the end of the week, winds turn southerly once more and a new storm system looks to approach from the west late Friday night into the weekend. Along with a cold front that will move through late Sunday night. This would likely be the best chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms in the next week. But if it’s like everything else we’ve seen this system will slowly dry up and bring nothing but hit and miss showers or nothing at all. We’ll keep watching.

EXTENDED PERIOD: The GFS is very wet in the extended period with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible. This would be great news for many but not for farmers as they head into the harvest season. Temperatures look to stay near or just slightly above seasonal readings for the middle to end of September.
