The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued an ICE STORM WARNING from 3am Sunday until Midnight Monday morning for Osceola, Dickinson, Sioux, O’Brien and Clay counties.
* TIMING…RAIN OR FREEZING RAIN WILL SPREAD INTO THE AREA AROUND
MIDNIGHT TONIGHT…WITH A PROLONGED PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN
EXPECTED LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MUCH OF THE DAY SUNDAY. FREEZING
RAIN WILL GRADUALLY CHANGE TO SNOW FROM WEST TO EAST…WITH SNOW
EXPECTED IN THE YANKTON AREA IN THE LATE MORNING…BUT NOT REACHING
THE SPENCER AND SPIRIT LAKE IOWA AREAS UNTIL TOWARD EVENING.
* ACCUMULATIONS…SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF A QUARTER TO A
HALF INCH ARE LIKELY LATE TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. THIS WILL BE
TOPPED BY 2 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW LATER SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.
* WIND AND VISIBILITY…WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 15 TO 30 MPH ON SUNDAY
AND SUNDAY NIGHT…WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS OF 35 TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE
ALONG THE MISSOURI RIVER VALLEY AREA FROM TYNDALL TO YANKTON AND
VERMILLION. THESE WINDS WILL CAUSE SIGNIFICANT STRESS ON ICE-LADEN
POWER LINES.

AN ICE STORM WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF ICE ACCUMULATIONS
WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. TRAVEL IS STRONGLY
DISCOURAGED. COMMERCE WILL LIKELY BE SEVERELY IMPACTED. IF YOU
MUST TRAVEL…KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT…FOOD…AND WATER IN YOUR
VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. ICE ACCUMULATIONS AND WINDS WILL
LIKELY LEAD TO SNAPPED POWER LINES AND FALLING TREE BRANCHES THAT
ADD TO THE DANGER.
