All of Iowa, Severe Weather

Hot Summer Day

A heat advisory remains in effect for areas south of US Hwy 18 and east of I-35 for the rest of the afternoon into the early evening hours. Heat index readings will surpass 100° in many areas this afternoon (Creston at 1pm has a heat index reading of 113°). Actual air temperatures will rise into the 90s statewide this afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in Minnesota this afternoon and move southeastward into the state. There is a moderate risk of severe weather for the rest of this afternoon and tonight mainly north of a line from Prairie Du Chien WI to Waterloo to Cherokee to Sioux Falls SD. Everyone else in the state is in a slight risk of severe weather. The main threat in Iowa looks to be from damaging straightline winds, with large hail and a tornado or two being secondary threats. Any storms also have the capability of producing heavy rain as well. Watches and Warnings will likely be forthcoming in the later afternoon into the evening hours.
