All of Iowa, Severe Weather

Storms Return Today

After a beautiful day yesterday where humidities were low and temperatures were in the upper 70s and low 80s across the state, showers and thunderstorms will make a return visit to the state today. Early this morning, a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued until 11am for most of Nebraska streching as far east as Norfolk and Columbus. There have been and continue to be numerous warnings from a batch of showers and thunderstorms along an advancing warm front moving through the central portions of Nebraska. These storms will move into western Iowa later this morning. Whether or not they’ll still be severe at that time remains a question, nevertheless there is a slight risk of severe weather today and tonight in western part of the state, mainly west of an Estherville to Omaha line (although this could get extended to the east depending on what the storms in Nebraska do)

The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds with any of the storms. The tornado threat will remain off to the west today.

Friday, the threat moves east and covers the entire state in a slight risk at that time. The main threats Friday will be the same as Thursday, large hail and damaging winds, however the best chances look to be off to the west once more for any possible tornadoes.

Along with the chances of severe weather, heat and humidity will also be making a comeback. Although today will not be hot and humid, Friday and Saturday will, with highs expected in the mid 80s to lower 90s statewide. With dewpoints possibly getting close to 70, some heat indices may approach or exceed 100° by Friday or Saturday afternoon across the state.
