Below normal temperatures with mostly sunny skies will remain the story today. An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible over the northeast quadrant, however these will be hit-and-miss and shouldn’t leave any huge precipitation by any means.
Tranquil is the best word to describe the Tuesday night through Wednesday forecast as high pressure dominates over the region. However, things will be changing late Wednesday night as a disturbance moves through the area. Showers and thunderstorms are likely south of Interstate 80 by early Thursday.
Much warmer weather can be expected on Thursday and Friday. High temperatures will range from the mid-70’s to mid-80’s throughout the state. Humidity will also be welcomed back with dew points in the mid-to-upper 60’s for many. Of course, with this type of “bubbling” weather, there is always a downside – widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday night, with another round Friday night. Accumulation from these systems look to be around an inch for some locations in northern Iowa with lesser to the south.
Severe weather is also possible with both rounds with a moderately unstable air mass in place courtesy of the warm temperatures and relatively-high dew points. While shear seems somewhat limited, a strengthening low level jet overnight may assist the severe threat. It is still a bit too early at this time to dissect further details, however this is something worth watching over the next few days.
The weekend looks to cool back down into the mid-to-upper 60s with precipitation chances lingering. Concluding point: get out and enjoy the nice weather while you can before wet weather hampers your outdoor plans.
Have a great Tuesday!
