Flash Flood Watch Over Much of Iowa Today

A very moist and unstable environment exists over the region today. Showers and thunderstorms have already plagued the state this morning, with additional torrential rainfall expected tonight as widespread strong showers and thunderstorms develop. One-to-three inches of rainfall is expected over the area with localized amounts up to six inches possible. The combination of the slow storm motion, high rainfall rates, and training will all lead to a threat of flash flooding, which is why the National Weather Service offices across the state have issued Flash Flood Watches in advance of the rain. Quick ponding of water can be expected with some roads flooded. Those in the watch area should monitor the situation carefully, especially in low-lying areas, and be prepared to take appropriate actions should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
