11:45 PM UPDATE: Heavy Snow Reducing Visibility Along Highway 20

Snow or sleet continues early this morning north of Interstate 80 with the primary band currently over the northeastern portion. It is currently anticipated that the heavy band of snow is setting up along the Highway 20 corridor from Dubuque to Waterloo – this is where the heaviest snowfall rates will be seen. This is impacting road conditions for many areas, including parts of Interstate 35 and Interstate 380. So far things are only partially covered, and the DOT is doing a good job of cleaning things up. We do not anticipate too atrocious of travel conditions overnight, however please take it easy if you must head out.

Our latest updated forecast for the short term now expands the three-to-five inch forecast area to most Iowa cities northeast of a line from the Quad Cities to Ames to Hawarden. The heavier totals will be confined to the Waterloo and Dubuque areas, where five-to-eight inches of snow is possible. The entirety of the northeastern half of the state will probably wake up to at least a inch or snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early Tuesday morning for many counties north of Interstate 80. The overall travel impacts will not be too great overall, outside of the higher total areas, but it would still be a good idea to take it easy. Blowing snow is of concern with 10-20 MPH north-to-northeastern winds with gusts to 30 MPH. The morning commute will be slightly affected… just remember to take it slow getting to your destination and take appropriate precautions beforehand.
