An upper level system over the Northern Plains will head southeast tonight and into tomorrow and will overspread snow over much of the state. Snow is expected to persist into Sunday afternoon and evening before finally drifting off during the overnight hours. The highest accumulations will likely be over northern and eastern Iowa, where four-to-six inches is forecast, including Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities. Winds are also expected to pickup on Sunday morning into the 15-25 MPH range, with gusts to 35 MPH at times. This will create periods of reduced visibility and dangerous travel.
For this reason, a Winter Weather Advisory has been posted over the northeastern half of the state from 9:00 p.m. tonight and into 6:00 p.m. tomorrow evening. Additional active weather is expected later this week with snow possible once again on Monday night and into Tuesday… and again from Tuesday night into Wednesday. There may be some low-end advisory totals with these spurts… somewhere along the lines of two-to-four inches from northwest to southeast. Nothing significant by any means. The bigger story this week will be astonishing temperatures in the upper 40s to mid 50s for many locations. More information on that will be published in later forecasts.
Make sure to take it easy on the roads if you must travel tonight and into tomorrow. Stay tuned to the Iowa Weather Network for the latest updates.
