Something Wintry to talk about

A WINTRY MIX: Skies today will be mainly cloudy with only some peaks of sunshine here and there. Highs today will be in the 30s. A storm system will move into the state late tonight through Monday into early on Tuesday. There is a chance of a wintry mix early on changing over to some rain in our southern and eastern counties with a rain snow mix possible in the rest of the state except the northwest where it will remain as snow for most of the event. Any accumulations are expected to be minor with a few inches possible in the northwestern counties and lighter amounts elsewhere. Total precipitation of 1-3 tenths of an inch are possible through early on Tuesday morning. Highs on Monday will be in the 30s to around 40.

WARM SPELL: Temperatures look to drop back into the 20s to lower 30s Tuesday and Wednesday next week before readings head up to the 30s and 40s Thursday and Friday. A clipper system will move northeast of the state which could bring a few more clouds in that part of the state but the precipitation looks to steer clear of the state at this time. There looks to be more sunshine by the middle to end of next week then we’ve seen in quite a while. A frontal system looks to sag into the state on Saturday which may cool readings in our northern counties but precipitation looks to be relatively isolated.

THE STORM TO WATCH: The GFS continues to show a significant system moving through the state over the first couple days of February. This would affect the Iowa Caucus (on the night of the 1st) and Groundhog Day (2nd). We’re fairly confident on the timing of the storm but there is still a lot of fluctuations with regards to the strength, temperature and track of the low pressure center. There is a chance of seeing, rain, wintry mix and snow but where that will be at what time is still question left unanswered at this time. We’ll continue watching this over the next couple of days as we draw closer to the event.

FOLLOWING: Looking further into February, colder air comes in the wake of the departing storm system. This looks to last for a few days before warmer air comes in toward the end of the period. We could see some light precipitation with the return of said air, however confidence this far out is rather low at this time.
