UP DOWN TURNAROUND: The next several days will feature a wide ranging plethora of weather across the state from bitter cold to warmth. From snow to perhaps some rain by later in the week. Yes it is Iowa in January, prepare for anything. Today will be no different as temperatures are not going to be heading anywhere with readings staying in the single digits and lower teens across the state. We will see some sunshine especially by later in the day as a clipper system will be moving away from the state during the morning hours. This could cause some travel issues during the morning commute. Tonight temperatures will crash below zero in the northeastern half of the state while the rest of the state will see readings above zero. We will also see temperatures rise toward dawn as warmer air begins to move back into the state. This will lead to readings in the 30s in southwestern Iowa and perhaps a few lower 40s in Nebraska. Those 40s will be moving into the state later in the week along with another storm system that could bring some rain and snow by the end of the week. A wide range of weather for all this week.
WEEKEND: What goes up, must come down and that’s what temperatures will do as we head into the weekend as an Arctic High Pressure comes sliding in from the north and northwest. This will drop readings back below zero at night and highs struggling to reach the teens. There is a chance of some light snow or flurry activity as well especially on Sunday.
OVER THE HILL: The GFS has a system skirting the state the middle of next week with a chance of some light snow over the southern half of the state. We’ll keep watching model data to see if this continues in the model runs. Further ahead, the model is showing the main active storm track will be south of the state keeping us relatively dry and somewhat seasonal for the middle to end of January with no real blasts of Arctic air seen after this week. Of course this is just model data and it will change as we get closer.
