FAIRLY QUIET FOR NOW: Not much change as we see it for the rest of this week with warm temperatures continuing for the rest of this week. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny today with highs in the 40s and 50s. Some places in southwest Iowa could touch 60. A disturbance will move just north of the state as we head into Thursday and that could bring a few more clouds to our northern counties but any precipitation is likely going to remain north of the state. Readings on Thursday will range from the lower 50s in our northern counties to the lower 60s in the south. Friday will have more of the same with partial sunshine around ahead of the upcoming weekend storm. Readings in the 50s to around 60 will be commonplace across the state.
WEEKEND STORM: As we head into the weekend, a storm system will be coming in from the southwest. This could bring us a chance of some rain by late Saturday into the day on Sunday. There will be enough cold air wrapping around the backside of the storm to produce some snowfall in our northwestern counties, however there is some discrepancy regarding where the rain and snow line might be as we head toward the latter half of the weekend. It is a storm that we’ll have to continue to watch closely as we move forward. What we do know is that a lot of precipitation is possible through Sunday evening with some areas possibly receiving an inch or more of liquid by that time. The storm will move away late Sunday night with cooler air moving in behind it.
NEXT WEEK: Right on the heels of the weekend storm is another one that looks to move in as we head into Tuesday. Monday will start cool but winds turn back out of the south warming temperatures up into the upper 30s through the 40s across the state. The storm moves in Tuesday with another chance of some rain and snow at that time. There will be more cold air involved with this system so most of the precipitation may fall as snow or a wintry mix. We should have more details on this possible system later this week. Cooler air more typical of mid-December will move in to end the week with temperatures likely in the 30s for highs and lows in the upper teens or lower 20s possible at that time.
NEARING THE YULETIDE: As we head further into the extended period which takes us up to Christmas Eve, another storm of some significance looks to move in around the 19th through the 21st with a chance of some snow possible. This would likely be the system that could give us a White Christmas, but it is still too far out in the model to get into specifics at this time. It will be a storm we’ll watch closely however. Cold air looks to stay entrenched across the state at least through Christmas Eve. We’ll keep tabs on that as we move forward as well.
