Did anyone feel the heat and humidity today? We sure are making up for some lost times we didn’t have this heat earlier in this summer. Today on warm southerly breezes highs soared to the low 90s in the far northern part of the state to the upper 90s across the south. The hottest overall temps came from the Omaha area which was only a couple of degrees shy of 100 peaking at 98.  Dew points everywhere were well into the 70s putting heat index values of around  100 to 105 range. The only parts of the start not to see 90s today were parts of the far northwest and north where upper 80s were archived, however, the humidity was even higher in these areas so it really didn’t feel much cooler. Of course today’s highs were a part of a heat wave that has been in place since August 31st.

90 Degree Days Stats

Today’s 91.F here at my station in Cumming brought the 19th day with highs at or above 90.4, of which occurred in the last 7 days. The average days with 90 is 24, so far we are lacking a few days of 90s this summer. Interestingly enough, 7 days were just 1 degree shy of 90. The hottest temp of the summer at my station was June 9th with a high of 96.F.

Northern Iowa had a much cooler summer this year. Mason City had only 3 days with highs of 90 degrees or warmer this year, the average is around 14.
