Iowa Weather Report September 2nd 2015: Feels Like the Fourth of July

HOT HAZY HUMID: Another hazy hot and humid day across the state today with readings well into the 80s and lower 90s. There will be plenty of sunshine once again as well. We still can’t rule out some isolated shower and thunderstorm activity mainly in our western and northern counties during the evening and overnight hours. This looks to last through the rest of the week with the heat and humidity lasting through to the upcoming holiday weekend.

WEEKEND STORM: Chances of showers and thunderstorms look to increase as we head into the holiday weekend with the best chances looking to be on Sunday and Monday with a frontal system that will slowly move through the state. Temperatures will remain warm ahead of the front with 80s and 90s with slightly lower temperatures on Monday with the amount of clouds and rain shower activity in the area. Precipitation amounts through this coming weekend of around a half inch will be possible with heavier amounts than that in our northwestern and northern counties with repeated activity from earlier in the week. This run of the GFS has the front slowly moving out of the state as we head into the shortened work week with chance of precipitation possible Tuesday and even into the first half of Wednesday as well. We’ll keep watching to see if this trend continues. Temperatures will drop back to seasonal levels as we head into the middle of next week.

FORWARD THINKING: As we head toward the middle of September, seasonal readings look to continue through the end of next week with some sunshine around. The GFS also is showing another storm around the 13th and 14th swinging through with much colder air in the wake of that system. This looks to last almost to the end of the period (17th) with readings modifying back to seasonal levels by that time. Since this is the first time we’ve seen this on the models, confidence is almost nil on this at this time on this outcome.
