POCKETS OF ACTIVITY: A very fluid forecast in the offing over the next several days with chances of showers and thunderstorms increasing as we head into the weekend and early next week. In the meantime, another dry mainly sunny day across the state today. Highs will get into the upper 70s north to the lower and middle 80s south. A few thunderstorms may move into the state late tonight into early on Saturday with a warm front passing through. Not everyone will see rain out of this, but everyone will be warmer and more humid on Saturday as highs will be well into the 80s and perhaps some lower 90s in southern Iowa. Most of the day should remain dry with any shower and thunderstorm activity holding out until late in the afternoon and evening. Some of those storms could become strong to severe with the main threats at this point being large hail and damaging winds. This will last until the early morning hours of Sunday. During the day Sunday will be fairly quiet with sunshine around once more and readings a bit cooler than on Saturday with upper 70s to middle 80s commonplace. Looking into next week, begins a rather unsettled weather pattern with numerous rounds of thunderstorms moving across the state. Most of these are expected to occur during the overnight hours into the early morning with the daylight hours remaining mostly dry. Readings will be in the upper 70s through the middle 80s through the period.
JUMPING INTO JULY: As we look toward the end of June and into July, the unsettled weather pattern is shown to come to an end by next weekend (according to this model run) with the flow turning more out of the northwest as a ridge which will be building south of the state this coming week will be shifting more to the west. This will result in a quieter pattern through the first few days of July before another system moves in around the 3rd and 4th of July with more showers and storms at that time. Timing is still in question so don’t change any July 4th plans yet. Temperatures look to be slightly cooler than average to start out with readings leveling out to seasonal levels by the end of the period.
