A rather dry end to the week is expected to be proceeded upon by a very wet period, marked by potential flash flooding. A low level jet will begin to enhance itself into the state on Saturday night as the rich moisture from the Gulf of Mexico plunges into the area. This saturated airmass will keep instability down to a minimum across the area and effectively just lead to moderate heavy rain for an extended period of time, beginning widespread on Saturday evening and continuing through Sunday. There may be a few breaks in the rain early Sunday before being rebooted back Sunday night.
Thanks to rainfall activity rates being kept to a relative minimum due to the stable atmosphere, the overall risk for flash flooding is low. The Weather Prediction Center has southwest and south central Iowa under a slight risk for excessive rainfall for today (day 2) and tomorrow (day 3). River flooding and areal flooding is a concern, especially across southwest and south central Iowa and along the Missouri, Raccoon, and Des Moines river basins. Anyone living along these rivers or in low-lying areas should pay attention to things over the next couple of days and be prepared to move to higher around if necessary.
