Iowa Weather Report April 21st 2015: Cool Nights, Sunny Days

COOL DAYS: Some cool days and night ahead with partly to mostly sunny skies through Thursday at least. Highs will be mainly in the 50s to lower 60s with lows in the 30s (even a few upper 20s in the northern counties). There will be numerous chances of some frost across the state over the next few nights, so be sure to take precautions for that.

WEEKEND: The GFS is now back on track with what it had two days ago with a system skirting the state to our south late Friday through Saturday. This could bring some chance of rain as far north as US 34 with only a few more clouds around for the rest of the state. Temperatures will come up a bit with 50s and 60s across the state Friday and again on Saturday. A disturbance late on Sunday into Monday may bring a slight chance of some showers at that time, but that doesn’t look to amount to a whole lot at this time.

LOOKING FORWARD: Looking into the extended period, the GFS still is showing a system moving into the area around the 29th and 30th with some showers and thunderstorms possible. This is likely the next best chance of widespread rainfall across the state. Readings look to warm up ahead of the system, perhaps into the 70s before cooling slightly behind the system as we head into May. The first couple days of May look active on this model run with several systems bringing chances of showers and thunderstorms to the area. The timing and strength of these systems are still in doubt as they’re still more than a week to ten days out, but we’ll watch for any trends as these draw closer. Temperatures heading into May look to be close to seasonal levels but any cloudiness and showers could pull those temperatures back a tad.
