Cold Morning In Store

The eastern and northeastern parts of the state remain under clear skies which will lead to very cold temperatures by sunrise. Readings at midnight have already dropped into the teens below zero at Mason City, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. Meanwhile in the western part of the state, clouds and some light snow has been falling for the last few hours. Amounts have been light, generally under an inch, but temperatures have held in the single digits above and below zero. Readings should hold or may drop a few more degrees there, while the eastern parts of the state will remain clear the entire night, allowing temperatures to drop possibly as cold as -20 or lower by morning. Record lows may be broken later this morning.

Waterloo hit a new record low yesterday morning when it dropped to -20.
