Severe Outbreak in South Central US Awakens Relatively Quiet Tornado Season

A relatively quiet severe weather season was brought back to life yesterday with seven tornadoes being reported across the Southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley regions. This brings the total tornadoes for March to eight, which comparatively speaking to the last three years, is very below average. 2015 as a whole has been quiet thus far with only 36 twisters seen, which only accompasses 23% of the 163 three year average. A lot of this system was thanks to a very warm and humid airmass that was in place across the state with 70s and 80s for highs. Tornadoes were not the primary threat, however – large hail and damaging winds were a bigger concern across the area.

Severe weather nationwide looks to be at a halt for now with only marginal chances at best over the next couple of weeks. We’ll keep an eye out.
