Well, it can finally be said! We have made it through the worst of the cold. Today was the last day of a very long stretch of colder than normal weather that has been in place since the second week of February and really has had the entire country all the way to the deep south engulfed in. Temperatures for most days have been 25 degrees colder than it should be this time of year. The continued cold much like last year has delayed our spring and we are at least a week behind were we should be. The delayed spring has been noticeable in the landscape as over the past few cold but fully sunny days I have noticed the Tulips have started to push slowly through the soil as the March sun warms it. It’s almost as though they “know” it’s their time to grow despite the opposing weather. It’s not just spring bulbs but other early flowering trees and shrubs as well. The buds on my Magnolia pictured above are appearing plump and ready to pop the second warmer weather arrives, which going to be this week. With the delayed spring and the extra long dormancy period, I expect that the 50s and 60s degree temperatures coming this week will lead to a very fast paced spring growth and the seasons first blooms could happen as early has the end of next week. We are at a tipping point and we are about to ride down a fast roller coaster pushing us into the full swing of the spring season. In your garden expect spring bulbs to quickly pop this week and may almost appear overnight! I will be following the spring growth sequence very closely this week as warm temperatures kick off the spring season, Yay for spring!
