Iowa Weather Report January 13th 2015: The Slow Climb

SLOWLY MODERATING: Temperatures will be on the upward swing as we move through the rest of the week. The bottom will be this morning and the peak will be sometime late this week and into the weekend where readings could easily get into the 30s and perhaps even a few 40s. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny through the period, however a disturbance will move just to the north of the state late tonight into Wednesday that could bring more clouds around on Wednesday in the eastern counties and perhaps a flurry or two as well. Highs today will be in the teens to around 20 with readings on Wednesday getting into the upper teens through the lower 30s. This run of the GFS has another arctic blast coming in Saturday night that could drop readings back down on Sunday to near or a bit below seasonal levels. There doesn’t look to be any significant precipitation through Sunday across the state at this time.

INTO NEXT WEEK: Remember the big storm that the GFS showed for next Monday? This run shows nothing, no storm, nothing. It does show that the warmer air looks to return heading into Monday of next week however another front from the north and northwest could bring some light precipitation to the state Monday night into next Tuesday. Given the model madness currently going on at this time period, we’ll wait a few days to get a clearer picture on what the beginning of next week will bring us.

EVEN FARTHER ALONG: As we look into the extended period, the GFS shows temperatures to be at or slightly below seasonal levels for the middle to end of January across the area. Several systems look to reinforce the colder air during the period with some snow possible with each of them. Models have been all over the board during this period so any confidence with this run is low. We’ll keep watching for any possible trends.
