Cold Air Has to Wait

The front which had gone through most of the state last night has now stalled early this morning over the southeastern half of the state. To the SE of the front, temperatures remain at or above freezing, even at this early hour of the morning in Mid-December, the temperature in Keokuk was 41. Meanwhile on the other side of the front, temperatures have dropped into the single digits and teens. Estherville was reporting light snow and a temperature of 9 with a wind chill of -10. In the middle, readings are in the 20s to around 30. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued in Central and Western Iowa which is in effect for a few more hours. This is for a possible glaze of ice, caused by warmer air moving over the cooler shallow air at the surface. Some light freezing drizzle and sleet has been reported over the last few hours in central Iowa. The amounts will be light, generally under a tenth of an inch. The entire storm system will move out of the state later today and temperatures will drop throughout the state at that time. Nighttime lows by Tuesday morning will be a few degrees either side of zero, with highs in the teens.
