Blizzard of 2009: Early Afternoon Update

Interstate 35 looking south from Orlabor Road in Ankeny

The picture above shows road conditions haven’t improved at all early this afternoon. More light snow showers are moving through the eastern half of the state. Tying that in with the winds that are continuing to gust over 40mph, it is creating dangerous travel conditions over the state. Roads remain closed and several counties have pulled their plows off the road due to the conditions. Wind chills will likely become a major factor tonight as actual temperatures will plummet below zero across most of the state tonight. With the winds that are likely to still be between 15-25mph, this will creat wind chills down to between -10 and -25 this evening and overnight. Wind Chill Advisories are out in NW Iowa and will likely be expanded after the blizzard warnings expire this evening.
