Roads are still a mess across a large portion of the state this evening. Several counties are under tow bans through the night. The heaviest snows have moved mainly to the east of Interstate 35, but another band of snow over northern Iowa is settling southeastward mainly along and north of US 30. Snow accumulations of 4-6″ have been common around the Des Moines area and off to the west. One report sent to us from Jamaica of 6″ of snow out there. The snow will continue moving off to the east and should be out of the state after Midnight tonight. Blowing snow will be an issue as we head into Tuesday as strong winds will blow in from the northwest. This will create some travel issues especially during the morning commute. The big story as we have mentioned for the last several updates and days will be the bitterly cold air that will be moving into the state this week. Wednesday looks to see highs below zero for most of the state except the far southern or southeastern counties of the state. Combined with the wind, we will see wind chills in the dangerous level of -25° and colder for as much as 36 hours or more in some areas.
As for the rest of tonight, if you don’t have to travel, don’t. If you are travelling, take it slow and leave plenty of room between you and the driver in front of you. Be aware of the snow plows tonight as well. They are trying to clear the roadways to make them safer for you and everyone else. Stay Warm
