Iowa Weather Report December 14th 2014: A Storm Comin’ On The Bare Trees

STORM MOVES IN: The next storm will move into the state later today and last through Monday into Monday night. This will bring showers across the state. Some of the precipitation may mix with some snow, sleet or freezing rain during the afternoon hours on Monday as colder air filters in from the northwest. Highs today will be in the 50s across the state with Monday seeing 30s in the northwest to the lower and middle 50s southeast. Readings will be dropping Monday night back into the teens northwest through the lower 30s southeast. The precipitation will end as some rain snow mix in the eastern counties and some light snow or flurries in the west. Any accumulations will likely be over the northwestern quarter of the state where an inch or two is possible.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS on this run has taken out the storm toward the end of the week. Most of the precipitation with this system will remain south of the state although the far southern and southeastern counties of the state could see some light snow showers or flurries. This may or may not accumulate, we’ll have to see if this trend continues or it moves farther north. We will see readings near seasonal levels for the middle of December with upper 20s through the middle 30s across the state.

LOOKING ON OUT: The GFS still shows some active weather across the state as we lead into Christmas. One system around the 23rd followed quickly by a storm on Christmas Day could bring some snow to the state at that time. It will also bring some quick shots of colder air along with it. We have seen this in various forms over the last few days and we’ll continue to monitor for any changes to this trend. These cold air shots look to continue through the end of the period with only a day or so of readings near or slightly above normal for the end of December. Looking at this, it would be a good idea to get outside today as it might be the last time we see temperatures this warm for quite a while.
