Iowa Weather Report November 15th 2014: Snowy Saturday

Today2

SNOWY SATURDAY: Snow will be moving into the state as we begin the weekend. This will be a light fluffy snow that shouldn’t cause too many travel problems, however as this will be the first accumulating snow for many in the state, be sure to use extra time to get to your destination if you are going to be out and about today. Accumulations of 2-4” will be possible with the heaviest to the north and lighter amounts to the south and southeast. Highs today will be in the 20s to lower 30s across the state.

MORE COLD AIR: Another dump of cold air comes in as we begin a new work week. It will also bring some chances of snow flurries but nothing to worry about at this point. Readings will struggle to reach 20 in many areas on Monday with the fresh snow on the ground. We will likely see wind chills at or below zero throughout the day on Monday and into Monday night and Tuesday morning. Readings will recover into the 20s and perhaps near 30 both Tuesday and Wednesday, but looking farther into the work week, no real warm up to near seasonal level temperatures is likely at this time.

EXTENDED PERIOD: As we look farther into the model run, there are several systems that we will need to monitor around the Thanksgiving Day Holiday. This could bring some travel issues to the state, but we’ll have a better grasp on them when we get closer. Toward the end of the month, the GFS shows a warm up that could bring readings back to near or perhaps even above seasonal levels. Given the longevity of this cold air, we’ll take this with a grain of salt. We’ll watch to see if this trend continues in the coming days.
