Iowa Weather Report August 18th 2014

SOME RAIN CHANCES: The new work week will bring some sunshine, warm temperatures, and some chances of showers and thunderstorms. Not everyone will get rain every day but there will be some chances of seeing some precipitation during the week ahead. It will be quite warm and humid. Somewhat atypical of the summer we’ve had as many schools are heading back into session now. Readings will be in the 80s and even some lower 90s through Friday. Outside the shower and thunderstorm chances there will be some sunshine around as well. This may aid in developing some of the activity. Widespread severe weather is not expected, however we can’t rule out an isolated storm here and there, similar to the brief tornado that occurred last evening in Emmet county east of Estherville.

WEEKEND ON OUT: The weekend looks to be rather split with Saturday looking dry and warm with readings well into the 80s and 90s across the state. A frontal system will be approaching from the west but will be slow to move with a ridge off to our east and south. This will finally begin to move Sunday into next Monday with showers and thunderstorms at that time. It’s still a bit early at this point but we still have plenty of time to watch it. That system will bring some cooler conditions as we look into the extended period for a few days before the winds turn southerly once again toward the end of the month. This will be ahead of a cold front that looks to move through on the 31st into the early part of the 1st of September. Given that is about two weeks out things are likely to change in coming model runs but we’ll watch for any continued trends in those runs.
