STORMS: No real change in our thinking with the GFS continuing to show numerous rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the state through at least Monday when a cold front will come through and bring a few days of drier and slightly cooler weather Tuesday and Wednesday. Some of the storms could become severe with the best chance of seeing that coming this weekend although we can’t rule out any isolated severe storm on any other day. Another thing to watch out for is heavy rain which may lead to some flash flooding. We saw some of that yesterday across central and northwest Iowa and we may see it yet again. Highs during this period will be mainly in the 80s with a few lower 90s possible this weekend in the southern counties depending on the amount of sunshine that is around during the daylight hours which is expected to be the driest times during this active period. Rainfall amounts by the time this pattern ends on Monday could be in the 1-2” range but as we saw yesterday, some places have already received more than that while others haven’t seen a drop of rain as yet.

A SLIGHT BREAK: Tuesday through Thursday should bring sunshine and cooler readings to the state with 70s and 80s across the state with lower humidity as well. A warm front will come through the state late Thursday night into Friday with more showers and thunderstorms at that time. It should be noted that Friday is the 4th of July. It’s too early to determine if any firework displays may get rained out at this point but the best guess is that the eastern counties would have the best chance of seeing any rain during that time as the warm front will be lifting out of the state at that time.

MOVING THROUGH JULY: A few dry and much warmer days look to follow next weekend and into the following week before a cold front comes through that may bring readings back to near seasonal levels. After that the pattern shows a more progressive pattern of storms moving through the areas every few days but nothing set in stone at this point.
