All of Iowa, Forecast

Iowa Weather Report May 29th 2014

BRIEF RESPITE: Most of the state will be dry today with mostly sunny skies and readings in the upper 70s to middle 80s across the state. The far southern counties may still see an isolated afternoon shower or storm, but even there the activity will be widely spaced. Any rainfall that does occur could be briefly heavy. Heading into Friday, the moisture levels look to return over the southwestern counties of the state where they may see an afternoon shower or storm as well. Readings will be similar to today with upper 70s to middle 80s across the state.

ACTIVE PATTERN: The next storm system moves in this weekend and looks to last through the beginning of next week as well. We may see repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms across the state. This will not be an all-day rain by any means as there will be some sunshine around that will help to destabilize the atmosphere which will lead to shower and thunderstorm development in the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms could become strong to severe but again it’s still too early to determine where that threat is highest as yet. We should be able to determine that in the next couple of days. Any of the storms that move through will also have the capability of producing some heavy rainfalls as well which may lead to some localized flooding in areas. Highs during this time frame will be in the lower and middle 80s cooling down into the upper 70s to lower 80s by the middle of next week when the rain chances will begin to lessen.

THE UNKNOWN EXTENDED PERIOD: This model run is showing some organization with some storm systems moving through the area every few days or so with temperatures close to seasonal levels with some days warmer and cooler than that. Any organized activity this time of the year MAY lead to possible severe weather but we would have to wait until we get at least within a few days before determining the actual threats. We will continue to watch to see if this trend continues or another one develops.
