Iowa Weather Report May 23rd 2014

THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Sunshine with some chances of showers and storms will be the story throughout the holiday weekend, but it’s not going to be a washout by any means. Today there will be plenty of sunshine across the state with some high and mid-level cloudiness around as well. Highs will be similar to Thursday with some 70s. The chances of precipitation begin to increase on Saturday mainly over the southwestern counties of the state, but even there the chances will be around 30% at best and not everyone there may get wet. The rest of the state will see partly to mostly sunny skies with readings in the 70s to low 80s across the area. Heading into Sunday, the chances of showers and storms increase again but still most places may get by with little or no rain. The storms, if they fire, will be widely scattered with reading remaining in the 70s and 80s across the state. Monday will be another similar day as well with scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly during the heat of the day in the afternoon. Highs will be in the 70s to lower 80s.

BACK TO THE GRIND: Tuesday and Wednesday will still feature some scattered showers and thunderstorms around but it won’t be an all-day rain as there will be several hours of dry sunny weather mainly in the morning into the early afternoon hours. Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the upper 70s to lower and middle 80s both days. The chance of precipitation both days will be around 20-30% so many areas may get by with no rain those days as well as during the holiday weekend preceding it.

INTO THE EXTENDED PERIOD: The GFS is showing some drier weather than previous with some seasonal readings during the period with some cooler weather toward the end of the period with a high pressure coming down from Canada. No trends are seen with this run so we have little confidence at this time beyond the typical 7 day period.
