Iowa Weather Report May 9th 2014

NO VIDEO DUE TO EARLIER SEVERE WEATHER

MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER: A cooler and calm day across the state with partly to mostly sunny skies and readings back into the 60s to lower 70s across the state. Heading into the weekend, we could see multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms with some dry time in between where we could see a few peaks of sunshine. One round looks to roll into the state late Saturday evening through early Sunday morning, followed by another Sunday night into Monday and perhaps even Monday afternoon. There is a chance some of the storms may become severe but we’ll wait until later today to pinpoint any threat at this time. Highs will generally be in the upper 60s through the lower and middle 70s through the weekend into Monday.

COOLER NEXT WEEK: Colder air will come in behind the storm system and may bring some backwash clouds and a few showers on Tuesday. Highs will be in the upper 50s to lower and middle 60s, but it could be cooler than that depending on the amount of cloud cover. The cooler weather looks to last through Thursday when a storm comes down with more showers and perhaps a thunderstorm at that time. A brief warm up on Thursday into the middle to upper 60s will drop back into the upper 50s to middle 60s on Friday before warming back up heading into the following weekend.

FARTHER ALONG: The GFS is still showing an active weather pattern as we head into the extended period with numerous chances of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could become strong but it’s way too early to determine severe weather threats more than a week out at this point. Readings look to remain near seasonal levels through the period, but even that may change in coming model runs as well. What is known is that farmers will not have much dry time to get the crops planted in the fields in the next two weeks.
