Large White Oak, near my house… our shed and yard in the distance. taken Sept 18th
This is a post about some Very old oak trees on our property, Even when my Dad bought this house and land 20 years ago, He noticed several Very large oak trees on the land behind our house, they 3 different kinds and they scattered across our land, but the largest one are in the southeast and west parts of our woods, the interest in these trees has been passed on to me and now we are both wondering about them. The one above in the photo is as wide as it is tall! and probably just over 100 years old.
Oak Trees can grow to be huge sizes the canopy (top ) can be as wide as the tree is tall, and they can live for many generations, This is surprising by true, Oak Trees can live to be 200+ years old, Expressly types like White Oak, Red Oak and Bur Oak and that is what has me wondering, What age some of these trees could be.
Very Large White Oak west of my house taken Sept 18th
I believe it is the largest White Oak on our land, The tree canopy (top) is so large that from a distance it looks as though there are many small trees, but it’s 1 entire tree, Me and my dad guessed the age of this tree We Estimate that this tree is well over 100 years old and if I has to guess a number, I would say it could be approaching 130 years old! I told my dad “If this tree could talk it would have many stories to tell!” This isn’t the only one around that is very old, there are several near our house that could be over topping 100 but this one in the photo above is the largest.
Now the next time you see a large tree, Think about how many years it has been there, How many storms it weathered through!
White Oak & Bur Oak in our Front yard taken Sept 18th
even the White Oaks in our yard are getting “up there” Size wise, We have 4 oaks in our yard, 3 are White Oak and 1 is Bur Oak the largest one in our yard is Bur Oak, and they produce tons of acorns. I Estimate that the Oaks in our yard are at least 80 years old, We based this estimated off how old our house is, we believe they were planted when the house was built, I am not sure why they planted them in pairs of 2 but all 4 were planted this way, I am also unsure of why there is 1 different kind of oak out of 3, it must have gotten mixed up.
