Daffodil/Hyacinth projects planted with pleasant surprise! How early is this compared to past years? Also update on southside daffs.

We had another awesome weather day across Western Wisconsin. Highs sored into the middle 60s under sunny skies. at my location had high of 65.F! Many signs of spring showing up today. I heard Canadian geese, and I heard the first croaking frogs of the season! The ponds behind my house are ice free.

This weather was perfect for planting some spring flower fridge projects, but This year I came across quite a nice surprise! Normally I leave the projects in the ground overwinter. Then in spring I move the old ones to a new location while I make room for the fridge grown flowers. But this year while inspecting the Daffodils that were left in the ground from last spring, I found out not only did they survive the winter. They have flower buds starting to show! The Daffodil sprouts from last spring are in the line closest to the camera in the show above there about 1 inch tall already. This appears to bring an end to my once “daffodil curse” which kept me from growing Daffodils. I just needed to find the right Daffodil type I guess! So instead I decided I am leaving the last years one there permanently. and just found other places in the garden for the fridge Daffodils. I also left a couple tulips sprouts.

Today I planted the Daffodil and Hyacinths only. I’m waiting to plant the tulips until I know the weather is going to stay nice. This year isn’t much of a difference compared to last year’s planting time. Last year I planted the Daffodils on March 16th. So this is only a tad earlier then last year. This is the second year in a row, an early snow melt has allowed for an early planting!

My Daffodils along the warm southern foundation of my house have really progressed in this sun with 60+ temps. They are now 5 inches tall, and actually very nearly blooming. (notice the bud on the one near the end of the line ) I feel I will really soon be talking about the first bloom of 2010 with these flowers located here! I will post once they open.
