Iowa Weather Report April 15th 2014

TAXING WEEK AHEAD: Another cold day across the state today with readings in the 40s and lower to middle 50s. There will be plenty of sunshine to go around but it won’t help the temperatures much. Winds turn south to southwesterly on Wednesday ahead of a disturbance that will be riding along a warm front that will be across the Iowa Minnesota border. There could be some rain showers in the far northern counties of the state during the day Wednesday into Wednesday night. Some of the precipitation may mix with some snow in the early morning and again at night but no significant issues are warranted at this time. Highs on Wednesday will range from the low 50s near the Iowa Minnesota border to the lower and middle 60s in the south. A cold front comes through on Thursday but unlike other runs which showed some precipitation along it, the GFS on this run shows almost nothing. Still we can’t rule out any chance of rain during the day on Thursday but the chances look to be greatly reduced at this time. Highs will be lowered down into the 50s to near 60 depending on the amount of cloud cover around. The front looks to stall just to the southeast of the state and a wave will move northeastward along the front that may bring more precipitation to the southeastern half of the state during the day on Friday. This doesn’t look as wet as previous runs but nevertheless the threat still remains. Some of this precipitation may mix with some wet snow Friday morning, but we’ll have to wait and see on that.

WEEKEND WARM UP: Readings will be returning to near normal on Saturday ahead of another system that will make an appearance late Saturday night into Sunday. This will bring another chance of some rain to the state. Severe weather looks unlikely at this point with this system, but we’ll watch for any changes in upcoming model runs.

AUDITING THROUGH APRIL: The extended period through the end of the month is showing no real trends developing from run to run. A few systems will bring some precipitation to the state and temperatures now look to be near seasonal levels unlike yesterday which showed cooler readings. So nothing is set in stone at this point regarding the end of the month.
