Iowa Weather Report March 23rd 2014

COLD AND SOME SNOW: Another cold day is in store across the state today. There will be plenty of sunshine around but the temperatures will feel as if it were the middle of February with readings in the 20s and 30s across the state. To add to the misery of the cold weather, a storm will move in late tonight through the day on Monday bringing with it a chance of some light snow. Current thinking suggests that 1-3” will be possible across the state with the best chances over the western and southern counties. The snow will move out by early Tuesday morning but readings will remain in the 20s and 30s across the state with partly to mostly sunny skies around after some early morning clouds.

AND UP WE GO: The winds will swing around to the southwest on Wednesday which will boost readings into the 30s in the northeastern counties through the 50s in the southwest with mainly sunny skies. However another storm approaches here on Thursday which may bring some rain to the state at that time. We could see a transition to a wintry mix or all snow Thursday night into Friday morning as colder air filters in but it’s still a bit early on pinpointing that down at this time. Friday will be cooler but not as cold as this weekend with some partly cloudy skies around. The weekend will be warmer with seasonal readings with mainly sunny skies at this time.

THROUGH THE EXTENDED TIME: The GFS is still showing a storm or possibly two separate storms over the first couple days of April. If this were to occur, this could bring some beneficial rainfall to the state. At the tail end of the system enough cold air could end the precipitation as a wintry mix, but it’s way too early to speculate on a system that is still more than 10 days out. We’ll keep watching in the coming days. Another storm toward the end of the period may also bring some more precipitation as well, but it’s a wait and see at this point.
