Iowa Weather Report March 18th 2014

MORE RAIN AND SNOW UPCOMING: Another system will move into the state today bringing with it a chance of some rain and rain snow mix to the area. It will move into the northwestern counties of the state late this morning and overspread the state by the afternoon and evening hours today. Highs will range from the 30s northwest to the middle 50s southeast. There will be some early sunshine in the eastern and southeastern counties before the clouds move in by the afternoon hours. Tonight the precipitation will change over to a rain snow mix or all snow before ending Wednesday morning. Any accumulations are expected to remain light, with the best chance of seeing snowfall amounts over an inch across the northern and northwestern counties of the state. Rainfall amounts up to a quarter inch are likely across the rest of the state during the day today into Wednesday morning. The system will move off to the east on Wednesday bringing clearing skies from west to east during the day. Readings will be a tad cooler with 30s and 40s for highs and lows down into the 20s.

UP TO THE WEEKEND: Warmer temperatures return on Thursday with upper 40s northeast to the lower and middle 60s southwest with mainly sunny skies. Another system moves in on Friday that may bring a slight chance of some rain to the state. The amounts look rather light at this point. Highs will be a bit cooler with more clouds around with 40s and 50s. Heading into the weekend, colder air comes down from the north which will drop readings back into the 30s and lower 40s across the state both Saturday and Sunday.

HEADING INTO APRIL: Another system comes down, into the state, from the northwest on Monday. This may bring some snow or a wintry mix to the state at that time. Another system around the 27th through the 28th of March could bring us some precipitation. Right now it looks to be mainly in the form of some rain perhaps with some snow during the overnight hours. Another system could move through around the end of the month into the beginning of April as well, which would bring more precipitation to the state at that time. One trend we have noticed of late is that the next two weeks look to be rather active with readings starting out below seasonal levels and that moderating to near seasonal levels toward the end of the month. We’ll watch to see if this continues or something else comes up that may change our thinking.
