Iowa Weather Report March 8th 2014

NEXT THREE DAYS: Skies will be clearing out today as the system that brought some precipitation to the state in a scattered fashion moves off to the east. Any lingering snow showers will be gone in southeastern Iowa by Noon. Highs today will be in the upper 20s through the 30s with skies becoming partly to mostly sunny. Readings don’t drop a whole lot tonight as lows will be in the teens and 20s with some areas seeing rising temperatures toward sunrise. This will really take hold Sunday as readings climb well into the 40s and 50s across the state. Some of the heavier snow packed areas in northeast Iowa may struggle to reach 40 degrees. There will be plenty of sunshine around as well. The same thing goes for Monday as well with partly to mostly sunny skies and readings in the 40s and 50s. Some areas may actually get to 60s in the areas with no snow on the ground. Be aware of some of the rivers beginning to open up as the ice will begin to melt. This may lead to some localized ice jams that could cause some flooding upstream from them.

COOLING BACK DOWN: We will have a cold front come through the state on Tuesday bringing with it some rain and or snow to the state at that time. It doesn’t look to amount to a whole lot at this time but it does look similar to the system we had last night with some wintry mix possible as well. Readings will vary from the 30s in the north and northwest to the 50s in the south and southeast. Wednesday will be cooler but not overly cold with 30s and lower 40s across the state with plenty of sunshine around. Temperatures rebound again on Thursday back into the 40s and perhaps 50s across the state. Another front comes through dry on Friday but will drop readings back into the 30s to lower 40s on Friday and Saturday with some slight chance of seeing some precipitation on Saturday.

LOOKING FARTHER OUT: The GFS is showing some active weather in the extended period with some systems that could bring some wintry and rainy precipitation to the state. The storm we had been seeing on the model runs the last few days is now gone, but a similar system is seen on the 21st through the 23rd that could bring some interesting weather to the area. Again, this is more than two weeks out and like the one storm we’ve been showing, it could be gone on the next run, but it is something we’ll have to keep an eye on.
