Iowa Weather Report March 4th 2014

WARMING UP: Another day with readings well below the seasonal levels today. It will not be as cold as Monday with readings in the teens and 20s for highs, with some places possibly hitting 30 in the far south and southwest. Another system will move across the state tonight into Wednesday bringing with it a chance of some light snow. Accumulations are expected to be around 1-3” inches with some isolated heavier totals. The heaviest snow will likely be across the northern half of the state. Thursday, the winds turn around to the southwest and readings boost into the upper 20s northeast to lower 40s southwest under mainly sunny skies. A cold front will come through on Friday that may bring some rain and or snow to the state at that time. This model run shows that the chances look to be scattered at best and light but we should be able to fine tune this forecast in the next day or so. Readings will drop back into the 20s and lower to middle 30s on Saturday as colder air will come back in briefly. Some lingering precipitation is possible during the morning hours on Saturday in our far southern counties. The warm air returns again on Sunday as the winds return from the southwest and readings will climb into the 30s and 40s across the state. We may see some light fog at that time early in the morning with any snow that melts during the previous days.

NEXT WEEK AND ON OUT: Going into next week and beyond, Monday will continue to stay warm with readings in the 30s and 40s but the GFS is showing us that more cold air is in store for most of next week as another front drops in from the north late Monday night into Next Tuesday. This looks to have little if any moisture along it, but it will drop readings back down below seasonal levels once again, perhaps back into the 20s for highs and lows back into the teens. Old Man Winter just does not want to leave us quite yet. The GFS shows the colder than average temperatures continuing until the following weekend when we could see a warm up briefly before another front comes in and drops the temperatures one more time. Overall it does look colder than average with some risk of seeing some rain and or snow across the area. At this point though with little run to run consistency with models, we’ll just have to continue to watch for any trends that may form over the next few days.
