Iowa Weather Report March 2nd 2014

INTO THE DEEP FREEZE: As the storm departs the state today, the cold arctic air will filter in bringing some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen in many weeks and perhaps the coldest temperatures we’ve ever seen in the month of March. Highs today will range from just below zero in the northern counties to near 10 in the south. Skies will be slowly clearing from north to south. Tonight could see record lows set with readings crashing into the teens and perhaps even 20 below zero range. It will all depend on light winds and clear skies as to whether or not we get to these temperatures. Monday we’ll continue to see partly to mostly sunny skies with readings in the single digits and lower teens. We may see a disturbance that may clip the northeastern counties with some snow late Monday night, with another disturbance possibly moving through Tuesday night into Wednesday with some light snow or flurries. At this time it does not look to be too serious but we’ll watch it.

WARMING SPELL: Temperatures look to rebound back into the 30s and perhaps 40s on Thursday as a warm front will move through the state. This may spark a light snow shower or flurry in the northern counties early in the day with partly to mostly sunny skies the rest of the day. A cold front will end the warm spell on Friday with some rain changing over to some snow or a wintry mix as it moves through. We’ll keep an eye on this as we draw closer to the event. Temperatures will drop back into at least the 20s for Saturday with mainly sunny skies. We will also be springing our clock ahead one hour as Daylight Savings Time begins next Sunday Morning and after one day of cold weather, we’ll be right back near seasonal levels next Sunday with partly to mostly sunny skies.

BLARNEY STONE: The extended period which takes us through the St. Patrick’s Day holiday show no real trends setting up at this point. The model is showing some systems moving through with some brief shots of colder air behind that last perhaps a day or so before quickly moderating back to near seasonal levels. Nothing set in the blarney stone as yet but we’re still watching.
