INTO THE WEEKEND: Colder air will be around today with the clipper system that brought the blizzard conditions to parts of NW into Central Iowa yesterday pulling off to our east. It will be mainly sunny with highs in the teens north and east through the 20s south and west. Clouds will be on the increase tonight ahead of another clipper system that will dropping in during the day on Saturday, this will likely lead to lows occurring just before midnight before seeing temperatures rise toward sunrise on Saturday. Highs on Saturday will be in the 20s and 30s across the state with the main area of snow over the eastern half of the state while the western half could see some sunshine around. Sunday will be the warmest day of possibly the next two weeks or more as readings are expected to be in the 30s and 40s across the state, perhaps some lower 50s close to the Missouri River where there is currently no snow cover on the ground.

INTO NEXT WEEK: Colder air returns late on Monday with another front moving through. There will be no moisture with this system but the temperatures will drop back below the average levels for this time of year. We’ll see highs back into the upper single digits northeast through the lower and middle 20s southwest. There is a slight chance of seeing some flurries late Monday night into Tuesday and again on Wednesday morning as well, but they won’t amount to much. Another disturbance on Thursday could also kick up some flurries or light snow showers as well with readings remaining below seasonal levels through the week.

INTO THE EXTENDED PERIOD: A big blast of arctic air arrives on the 25th with some accumulating snow possible. This will be followed by air that may be similar to what we had early last week, with readings during the day in the single digits above or below zero and lows in the teens and possibly 20s below zero once again. Some more snow is possible on the 27th and 28th as well as a system rounds the base of this huge trough that just sets up shop over the eastern two-thirds of the country. This will keep temperatures well below seasonal levels for the rest of the month. Everyone better enjoy the weather on Sunday because we may not see anything close to those temperatures for several weeks.
