COLD BLAST START: It will be cold for the next week or so across the area. Highs today will range from the single digits NW to the lower and middle 20s southeast. Skies tonight will be partly to mostly cloudy skies. Lows will range from subzero over the northern and northwestern counties to the single digits and lower teens in the east and southeast. Friday won’t be much better although the skies will be mainly sunny, readings will struggle to get much above zero in the NW through the teens to near 20 southeast.

SNOWY SUNDAY: A new storm will move in from the southwest on Sunday. This will overspread snow into the state at that time, starting in the southwestern counties by early morning and by midday over the rest of the state. It is still looking likely to see some accumulating snow with this system with the main target to see the heaviest snowfalls would be south of an Omaha to Waterloo to PDC line. Several inches of snow are possible, but it’s still a bit too early to determine exact snowfall amounts at this time, however it is looking to be a dry fluffy snow which will tend to blow around a lot. Thereafter into the early part of next week another shot of cold air will plunge into the state with readings down into the single digits and teens for highs (if not colder) and subzero lows. A quick shot of light snow or flurries is possible early on the 11th with the cold slowly beginning to moderate.

FAR OUT STORMS: The GFS is very active with weather in the extended period. This includes a significant storm around the 13th through the 15th. Another weaker system late on the 16th into the 17th and another one on the 18th into the 19th that will bring much colder weather to the area if this pans out. We’ve been seeing some sort of active weather heading toward Christmas in the past few days but we’ll have to keep watching for any changes as we draw closer.
