COLD WAVE: The cold air is finally on its way. Temperatures will be falling throughout the day down into the single digits northwest to near 20 southeast by daybreak on Thursday. We’ll see some lingering snow across the NW, rain changing to snow before ending in the north and northeastern counties and some rain that may mix with some snow before ending during the afternoon hours. Any accumulating snow will be mainly confined to the northwestern counties of the state north of a Sioux City to Algona line. The sun returns on Thursday with highs near 10 in the NW to middle to upper 20s southeast. The cold will continue into the weekend with highs struggling through the teens (some areas in the NW may see single digits) and lows in the single digits above and below zero.

SNOWY SUNDAY: Another chance of some snow over the state on Sunday as another wave moves through the south into the Ohio Valley. This could bring some accumulating snow to the state with the main target being the southern and eastern counties of the state. It’s too early to determine amounts at this time, but we’ll be able to fine tune that in the coming days. Highs through this period will still be in the teens and 20s with lows in the single digits above zero (perhaps below zero in the far NW). As the storm departs, the cold air will reinforce dropping readings possibly into the single digits and teens for highs and lows will likely be subzero with the amount of snow cover on the ground.

THE EXTENDED PERIOD: The model continues to show another snow storm around the 13th with another bout of cold air behind that, but temperatures do look to moderate in the middle of the month, perhaps to near freezing for highs, of course all that dependent on the amount of snow that will be on the ground at that time. Another storm around the 19th could bring some rain and snow and another dump of arctic air behind that, just in time for the last days before Christmas.
